#NOT ONE Inch
Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr.’s rise to the presidency of the Philippines in June 2022 is a troubling development, given his family’s legacy and his own campaign promises. His election campaign, with the slogan “Unity for the Philippines,” relies on a disturbing trend of downplaying the egregious actions of his father, Ferdinand Marcos Sr., during his authoritarian rule. This revisionist narrative conveniently ignores the dark period of martial law, rampant human rights abuses, and the massive corruption that characterized his father’s regime.
Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s attempts to present himself as a champion of economic progress and stability ring hollow in the face of the grim reality of his family’s history. The widespread use of misinformation and false narratives during his campaign, aimed at glorifying his father’s rule, is a concerning indication of his willingness to manipulate public perception for political gain.
